Is your skin cracked and ashy? Here’s why.

Occasionally you may find your skin changes in the way it looks and feels. It can become dry and flakey. For some lucky people this isn’t an issue. But for others it can be a big problem. Your skin may even become cracked or ashy after a while. If it happens to you, here are some common causes.

Showers or baths that are too hot

There’s nothing quite like taking a long, hot shower after a tough day. It’s a great way to relax and unwind. But, if you stay in the hot water too long, it affects the natural oils in your skin. This can result in your skin drying out and becoming flakey.

If you do choose to take long, hot baths or showers, remember to moisturise properly afterwards. It will help limit the damage.

Not hydrating

Every health expert will tell you that drinking water is important. This is especially true for your skin. You may find you’re not that thirsty some days, but you should drink a decent amount of water anyway. On average, you should drink at very least six glasses of water a day. If you’re exercising, you will need to drink a few more.

Staying properly hydrated is one way to help dry and ashy skin. A good way to remember to keep drinking water is to carry a water bottle around with you and keep track of your intake.

Using the wrong products

Buying soap may not seem like a purchase you need to carefully think about. But not all soaps are the same. Some have harsher ingredients that work to remove germs but don’t necessarily protect your skin. Look for soaps that clean and moisturise your skin at the same time.

Remember, the soap you use can depend on the type of skin you have, whether it’s oily or dry. Your skin changes with the season and you may need to change the products you purchase.

These three things contribute to dry skin. If you have cracked and ashy skin, take extra precautions to prevent the problem getting worse. Of course, Ingram’s has a range of products to help you heal and care for dry and irritated skin.
