Big night out? Five ways to make sure you look and feel your best

Sometimes life gets busy and you simply don’t have the time for a social life. You have appointments, places to be and a to-do list longer than a paperback novel. There just aren’t enough hours in a day to set some aside to have good old-fashioned fun. That’s when you need to plan a big night out.

It’s important to have some fun with your besties every now and then, no matter how busy life gets. Which is why a big night out is the answer. You get all dressed up, go out to your favourite bar or nightclub and party like tomorrow doesn’t exist. It’s the best way to pack as much fun into one night as possible.

Of course, when you’re planning a big night out, you want to make sure you look amazing! You can’t just go out in whatever you wore during the day. You need the night to be special and so, naturally, you need to look extra special so you feel great. Here’s how to make sure that happens.

What to do before you even get dressed

If you’ve had a long, hard day, put aside some time to relax before you start getting ready to go out. Getting ready shouldn’t be a chore, it should be fun. Take a shower, go through your dry, sensitive skincare routine and take a moment to breathe. Make sure to plan your night out so that it doesn’t start an hour after you get home. You don’t want to feel rushed and exhausted by the time you arrive at the party. Plus, of course, you want time to make yourself look your best, even after a long day or week.

Don’t just go through the motions when you’re getting ready. Put on some of your favourite tracks and maybe even light some candles. This is all part of the experience of a big night out. It doesn’t start when you leave your house, it starts when you decide it starts.

How to make sure your outfit is perfect

No one knows what you look your best in better than you. You know what colours suit you, whether you should wear a dress or jeans and, most importantly, what you have in your closet. However, you don’t want to wear what you wear every time you go out. Yes, you want to feel comfortable but you also want to feel daring and bold. Trying something new is the best way to do that. This doesn’t mean you have to go on a shopping spree, you can simply borrow something from a friend or pair clothing items that you haven’t previously tried together. Of course, you can’t put together a brand new outfit on the night and expect it to work.

Take a look through your closet the day before your big night out. Try on all the different clothing options you’ve been thinking about. See what looks good and feels great. Then set aside at least two outfits. If you change your mind at the last minute, you want to have a back-up you know will look just as stunning. It’s always a good idea to look up the expected temperature for the night, although you should keep in mind that you’ll likely be inside most of the time (layers are always a solid option).

Choosing your hairstyle is a big decision

Never underestimate the power of a good hairstyle. Whether your hair is long or short, you should take some time to think about the hairstyle you want for your big night out.

You should start off by considering what you’re going to be doing for the night. A fancy up-style that would take ages to carefully arrange may be perfect for an upmarket restaurant and bars you need to be on a guest list to enter, but it’s not worth it if it’s all going to come undone on the dancefloor in a crowded nightclub. If you have naturally frizzy, curly hair and want to flat iron it to perfection, just ensure you aren’t going somewhere packed with poor ventilation where the humidity will instantly undo all the hard work you put in. Where you’re going matters when it comes to what you do with your hair.

It’s also always nice to try something new when you want to feel glamorous on a night out on the town. However, as with your clothing choice, you shouldn’t attempt a brand new look an hour before heading out. What you should do is try out the hairstyle a few days before and, if it’s not an easy task, maybe even practice it a few times. You don’t want to find out at the last minute that the hairdo you’ve been dying to try doesn’t suit the shape of your face.

Accessories and finishing touches

The thing about accessories is that they can make or break an outfit. So, choose wisely. When you’re going through your outfit choices, decide what accessories go with which items of clothing. If you’re bored of all the accessories you wear every day, why not ask a friend to come over with their collection and you can swap a few things for a while. It’s a great idea because you still get your favourites back at the end but you have something shiny and new to wear on the night.

By now you’re probably well aware of what suits you when it comes to makeup. If you have a style you know works for you and suits your plans for the night, go with it. However, if you’re one of those people who rarely wears more than a bit of mascara, maybe it’s time to try something bolder. If you’re not someone who knows how to handle smokey eyes like a pro, maybe ask one of the people you’re going out with if they can stop by your place before you hit the road. People who know their way around a makeup bag usually enjoy helping others out every now and then.

You’re dressed, your hair is done and your makeup couldn’t be better… but there’s one last thing you need to do!

It’s time to get excited. Just like sports stars hype themselves up before a big game, you need to hype yourself up before you go out. Dance around your bedroom to your favourite song, strike poses while looking at yourself in the mirror and maybe even take a selfie or three for Instagram. Tonight is about looking good, feeling great and having loads of fun. Enjoy!
